Favorite Princess Bride character?

So this weekend I was wearing my awesome Inigo Montoya shirt and and it got me thinking about what an awesome movie the Princess Bride is. I then began to wonder who my favorite character was and to be honest it’s pretty hard decision. I mean really. Inigo is very cool…”Hello, my name is…” but there were so many great characters. Westley, The Impressive Clergyman (classic), Fezzik, Miracle Max… on of my favorite lines is then the Grandpa (Peter Falk) says to the Grandson (Fred Savage), “Your very smart. Shut-up.” So what do you think? I have a poll..either here or on my sidebar asking the simple question “Who is your favorite Princess Bride Character?” I have a pretty lengthy list but if you want someone listed who I left out then let me know and I will be glad to take care of it. The quotes are listed purely for the sake of laughter and reference, so enjoy.
Comments are welcome and votes are appreciates.

So I like collecting data. I analyze my google analytics stuff way more than I should and other things of that nature. This year we had an opportunity to ask a funny question along with some serious ones, to the Sunday attenders at Cross Point in Dickson,TN. The question was simple: what is your favorite [...]

Call me insensitive but this will be my “You really have to get over it” moment for the day. It appears that animal activist are all in a tizzy because a Japanese aquarium (an aquarium in Japan for the lay person) is putting Santa hats on White Whales.

Well the poll seems to be going well (vote if you have not yet…I have other plans for that…maybe). Looks like Inigo is way ahead, but I plan to leave it open for a few weeks and see what happens. However, I have been getting a lot of questions about where I got my [...]

Miracle Max and his wife:
Max – “Stop saying that name witch!”
Wife – “I’m not a witch I’m your wife. HUMPERDINK HUMPERDINK HUMPERDINK!”
Classic.
Oh and “mostly dead”

Nice call slim. I considered adding Valerie (Max’s wife)…
Miracle Max: Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only mostly dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there’s usually only one thing you can do.
Inigo Montoya: What’s that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change.
great stuff. Thanks!

Inigo all the way. I have seen the movie and read the book multiple times, and the only flaw is that Inigo loses to Westley. I like Inigo so much more, cared so much more about his story, that I don’t like that the only Wizard alive, that studied 20 hours a day for 10 years, is beaten by a guy that studied for 3-5 years.
It’s supposed to establish just how awesome Westley is, that he can beat a guy as good as Inigo, but I just didn’t buy it. It offended me aesthetically.

DCB,
You know I felt the exact same way when reading the book (which is much better than the move, but isn’t that usually the case with books?). I mean he is a Wizard, and I don’t think Goldman/ Morgernstern(joke) was saying look Westley is a bad-ass so much as saying that fighting for love there was greater than Inigo’s motive (hired-gun/revenge)….now if someone needs a tissue after that I’m sure I have one here somewhere…

My favourite character in the book is the narrator/writer (Goldman or Goldberg or Goldblum, whatever his name was). But for the movie, I gotta pick Fezzik.

thanks for the comment whatigotsofar. I have always found it interesting the way the grandpa in the movie kind of took the place of the narrator in the book. In fact, you’ve inspired me to pull the book back out and take another read.

Emma…
Westley’s “Ask you wish” was a great line, but I felt “Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.” was much funnier… plus I use that all the time.

I can’t believe Count Rugen only got 2 votes!
“Get some rest. If you don’t have your health you … don’t have anything.”
“This is for posterity, so try to be honest.”
And his most memorable …
“STOP SAYING THAT!!”

@Heleen
Rugen did have some great lines. I would have honestly expected more than two votes as well.

I read the book on holiday and decided that, while Westley is an amazing hero and Fezzik is very endearing, I love Inigo ‘You killed my father, prepare to die’ Montoya. Don’t know why, he’s just awesome!

Miracle Max
“Oh, you never had it so good.”
“While you’re at it, why don’t you give me a paper cut and pour lemon juice on it. We’re closed!”
Billy Crystal’s stand up talked about how his dad had a store, but would always tell everyone that it was closed… What kind of person runs a business that way?

In the preface to the book, Goldman makes no bones about the fact that Fezzik is HIS favorite character. In fact, he explains that the reason it took so many years to get the movie made was that there was no actor that could fill the shoes (very literally) of Fezzik. Goldman acknowledges that Andre the Giant had some pronunciation issues, but he does a great job of making Fezzik the endearing character he was written to be. I kind of agree with Goldman. Fezzik doesn’t really have the funniest lines, (that honor probably goes to Miracle Max or Westley,) but he is definitely the character with which you can get the most emotionally attached.

So many good points / funny thoughts.
@ kristi curtis…I’ve read the book several time but only vaguely remember that. Time for a re-read I suppose.
@Reg. That’s one of the best Fezzik quotes in the film!
